Rathausausstellung 2026 - Tafel 26: Ausgrenzung aus der »Volksgemeinschaft« | Town-hall Exhibition 2026 - Panel 26: Exclusion from the Volksgemeinschaft [national community]

Nazi racism in the cultural sector While the racial ideology of the Nazi regime was aimed first and foremost at Jewish people, the Sinti and Roma communities also faced persecution and exclusion. Artists were left with few or no opportunities to perform and were increasingly banned from their professions. Black people, too, were excluded from the cultural sphere. One exception was the Deutsche Afrika-Schau [German Africa Show], which ran until 1940, and films with ‘exotic’ themes that were in keeping with colonial propaganda and emphasised the supposed inferiority of Black people. Many Jewish artists as well as many Sinti and Roma were murdered in ghettos and in concentration and extermination camps.
