Culture under control (Town-hall Exhibition 2026)
Hamburg's cultural institutions and the Office of Cultural Affairs during the Nazi era

Until 1933, Hamburg enjoyed a vibrant cultural life. Modern art attracted visitors to its museums, and big bands performed in concert halls and dance venues. Theatres and a multitude of new cinemas offered a diverse programme. But after the National Socialist regime seized power, cultural life came under the control of the newly founded Office of Cultural Affairs.
So what role did culture play in Hamburg under the Nazi regime? The exhibition illustrates how cultural institutions adapted, became part of the Nazi propaganda machine, and participated in various means of persecution. It also gives an account of instances of covert rebellion and isolated pockets of resistance.
